Process

Design can be art. Design can be aesthetics. Design is so simple, that's why it is so complicated.

A successful project starts with planning and design; no matter how small or large the project. A well-considered design will bring your idea to fruition and minimise any potential disruptions in the build process.

Outdoor Society provides a comprehensive design and project management service. We will work collaboratively with you to create a unique, custom landscape design that not only fulfils your brief, but meets your individual lifestyle requirements. Our team of experts meticulously create masterful designs that compliment the aesthetic of your property whilst providing functional solutions that maximise the usage of your outdoor space.

Process

Our goal is to work collaboratively with all our clients to deliver well considered designs with functional use of space.

1) Consultation

The initial consultation is free of charge. We meet on site and discuss your specific project requirements. During this meeting, we also take the opportunity to experience the site first-hand, to see the existing conditions; allowing us to make note of any potential design opportunities or challenges.

We will gain an understanding of your hopes and aspirations for your garden space and discuss foreseeable hurdles such as council regulations and engineering.

2) Project Brief & Budget

Following the initial consultation, we generate a design brief and detailed cost estimate including our fee proposal. The service fee for the design component varies depending on the complexity and size of the project. We assess each project on its individual merits and deliver value through design, benefiting clients competitively, strategically and creatively.

For larger projects with multiple stakeholders (such as schools and community facilities), the briefing process may also include comprehensive user group meetings, client surveys and collaborative workshops, where we fully explore all aspects of the user-group demographic. During this exploratory, information seeking process, we engage collaboratively with our clients, seeking to deeply understand their vision, to ensure a meaningful and purposeful outcome for the project.

Once the design brief and budget have been agreed, we sign contracts, and begin work on designing your unique landscape.

3) Concept Design

The design phase is an iterative process. We employ systematic yet flexible methods aimed at exponentially improving practices through evidence-based research and leaned experience. By continual analysis and implementation of contextually-sensitive design principles, we explore ideas and present our client with a potential design direction for their project. The conceptual design proposal may include schematic diagrams, plans and layout drawings, showing ’hardscaping’ materials and ‘softscaping’ planting schemes.

The concept design stage establishes a functional and visual aesthetic for the landscape and identifies any building regulations that may affect the overall design.

4) Design Development

The design development stage is a refinement of the ‘concept’ phase; we home in on the pragmatics and buildability of the design, implementing client feedback from the initial concept proposal and ensuring alliance with the ‘design brief’ and budget, to produce a clear direction for the final design.

During the ‘Design Development’ phase, clients receive drawings of the proposed layout, exploration of built structures (such as pergolas, outdoor seating, BBQ facilities etc), plant selections, materials and colour selections, lighting proposals, and proposed resolution to site specification conditions.

At this stage, you may also like to see a 3D rendering / visualisation of your project, to assist you in fully understanding the proposed design. We offer a full rendering service which provides you the opportunity to receive image “snap shots” or be fully immersed in video flythroughs. 3D rendering is an optional ‘ad-on’ service and priced on application.

5) Specification & Documentation

Once the final design is consolidated, we can produce a full specification & construction documentation package. *This is a great option for clients residing outside the Melbourne Bayside/Mornington Peninsula locale, who wish to engage third party trades to complete the works on site.

Construction documentation is a set of detailed, technical drawings and written specification/schedules that identify specific design elements, sizes, quantities, construction methods, materiality and plants; accompanied by supplier details and sourcing information.

At the completion of the Documentation phase, clients are issued a full set of construction documents that can be used at their discretion to obtain competitive quotes for the proposed landscape works.

6) Design & Construction (D&C)

At Outdoor Society we offer a holistic approach to the design and construction of landscape and pool projects. We relish in creating value for our clients through the D&C process; with competitive, strategic and creative benefits. The ‘D&C’ process reduces reliance on comprehensive ‘construction documentation’ as our team work together towards a common goal.

By working collaboratively with us from design inception through to project completion, our client’s enjoy a streamlined process that ensures the integrity of the design is fully realised and articulated on site, whilst strictly adhering budgets and timeframes. Our designers, landscapers and project managers work hand-in-hand to deliver projects seamlessly; creating exceptional landscaped environments for our clients.

Any clients of ours have the option to choose how far they take the design process, and are able to exit at any stage. Please contact us to discuss your design requirements, or feel free to grab a copy of our brochure here.
